5 Ma essi ignorano, perché lo vogliono, che da principio per la parola di Dio furono i cieli, e la terra (uscita) dall'acqua e formata per mezzo dell'acqua:
6 E che per queste stesse cose il mondo d'allora perì inondato dall'acqua.
7 Ma i cieli e la terra che esistono adesso, sono conservati dalla stesa parola e riserbati al fuoco per il giorno del giudizio e della perdizione degli uomini empi.

Ubaldo, nato da nobile famiglia a Gubbio nell'Umbria, fin dai primi anni fu allevato con gran cura nella pietà e nelle lettere; e appena giovanetto, pressato più volte a prender moglie, non abbandonò mai il proposito di mantenersi vergine. Ordinato sacerdote, distribuì il suo patrimonio ai poveri e alle chiese, ed entrato nell'istituto dei canonici regolari dell'ordine di sant'Agostino, lo trapiantò poi in patria e visse in esso santamente per qualche tempo. Sparsasi la fama della sua santità, fu preposto, suo malgrado, dal sommo Pontefice Onorio IV alla Chiesa di Gubbio, e consacrato vescovo.

Preso pertanto possesso della sua chiesa, senza cambiar nulla nel suo tenore di vita, cominciò a distinguersi in ogni genere di virtù, tanto più che procurava assai efficacemente con la parola e con l'esempio la salute degli altri, essendosi fatto veramente «modello del suo gregge» 1 Pt 5,3. Parco nel vitto, senza ricercatezza nel vestire, con un letto duro e povero, portava continuamente nel suo corpo la mortificazione della croce, nutrendo ogni giorno il suo spirito con una insaziabile applicazione alla preghiera. Ond'è che giunse a quell'ammirabile mansuetudine, che gli fece sopportare non solo imperturbato le più gravi ingiurie ed affronti, ma ancora prodigare con ammirabile tenerezza di carità ogni sorta di benevolenza verso i suoi persecutori.

Lettura 6
Due anni prima di lasciare questa vita, tormentato da lunghe malattie, e quindi purificato come l'oro nella fornace da acerbissime sofferenze corporali, ne ringraziava continuamente il Signore. Giunto poi il santo giorno di Pentecoste, s'addormentò nella pace dopo aver governato la chiesa affidatagli con somma lode per molti anni, illustre per sante opere e per miracoli. Papa Celestino III l'iscrisse nel numero dei Santi. Il suo potere risplende sopratutto nel mettere in fuga gli spiriti immondi. Il suo corpo poi, mantenutosi incorrotto dopo tanti secoli, riscuote grande venerazione dal popolo della sua patria, che più d'una volta egli ha liberato da pericoli imminenti.

Omelia 9 sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, ci avverte di considerare diligentemente che noi, che abbiamo ricevuto in questo mondo più degli altri, saremo poi giudicati più severamente dall'autore del mondo. Infatti più i doni sono numerosi, e tanto più grande è il conto che bisogna renderne. Le grazie dunque che si ricevono, devono rendere ciascuno tanto più umile e più pronto a servire a Dio, quanto più si vide obbligato a renderne conto. Ecco un uomo che, nel mettersi in viaggio, chiama i suoi servi e divide tra loro i talenti da far fruttare. Ma dopo molto tempo ritorna per chiederne conto, e ricompensa del guadagno fatto coloro che li hanno impiegati bene, mentre condanna il servo che fu negligente nel farli fruttare.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Chi è dunque quest'uomo che si mette in viaggio, se non il nostro Redentore che, col corpo che aveva preso, se ne andò in cielo? La terra è infatti il luogo proprio della carne; ed essa è comò condotta a mettersi in viaggio quando dal nostro Redentore viene portata in cielo. Ma, come quest'uomo, egli, prima di mettersi in viaggio, consegnò ai suoi servi i propri beni, perché concesse ai suoi fedeli dei doni spirituali. E ad uno diede cinque talenti, ad un altro due, ad un altro uno. Cinque sono infatti i sensi del corpo, cioè: la vista, l'udito, il gusto, l'odorato e il tatto. Con i cinque talenti dunque viene rappresentato il dono dei cinque sensi, cioè la conoscenza delle cose esteriori ; con i due talenti invece vengono indicati l'intelletto e l'azione; con l'unico talento infine si indica soltanto l'intelletto.

Ci sono pure alcuni che, quasi arricchiti di due talenti, ricevono il dono dell'intelletto e dell'azione, comprendono le sottigliezze interiori e operano meraviglie all'esterno; e mentre predicano agli altri con l'intelligenza e l'azione, riportano quasi un doppio guadagno dalla loro attività.

Ubald was born of a noble family at Gubbio in Umbria, and well established in godliness and learning from his earliest years. When he was a young man, it was often proposed to him to marry, but he never abandoned his determination to preserve his virginity. After that he was ordained Priest he divided his inheritance among the poor and Churches, and embraced the Institute of Canons Regular of St. Augustine. This Institute he brought to Gubbio, and for some time led therein a most holy life. When the fame of his saintliness had got noised abroad, Pope Honorius II set him, contrary to his own wishes, over the Church of Gubbio, and he was honoured with consecration as Bishop by the hands of the said Pope himself, in the year of our Lord 1129.

When Ubald came to live as Bishop in Gubbio, he changed his way of life in no wise from that which he had led before, but his virtues began to be more eminent because his word and example were now more able to benefit his neighbours, to whom the shepherd of their souls was a pattern, not by outward showing only, but from his heart. He ate little, dressed simply, and slept upon a hard and very poor bed. He “always bore in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus,” 2 Cor. iv. 10, while he daily fed his soul in unceasing and earnest prayer. Hence he acquired such wonderful meekness, that when he was most grievously wronged and insulted he not only took it patiently, but, by a strange impulse of love for them, embraced his persecutors with every proof of affection.

Just the space of two years before Ubald passed away from this present life, he was tried as gold in the furnace, by grievous bodily weakness, and, day after day, amid the sharpest sufferings, he never ceased patiently to give God thanks. He rested in peace on the sacred day of Pentecost, in the year 1160, having for many years governed with great praise the Church which had been entrusted to him, and glorious for good works and miracles. Pope Celestine III. numbered him with the Saints. His strength is most chiefly shown in the casting out of evil spirits. His body hath remained without corruption for all these ages, and is reverenced greatly in his native town by Christ's faithful people. To them he hath more than once shown himself good at need.

Dearly beloved brethren, this Lesson from the Holy Gospel moveth us to take good heed lest we, who are seen in this world to have received more than others, should thereby bring ourselves into greater condemnation from the Maker of this world. To whom much is given, of the same is much required. Therefore, let him that receiveth much, strive to be all the more lowly, and all the more ready to do God service, for his very gifts’ sake, knowing that he will be obliged to give account thereof. Behold, a man, travelling into a far country, calleth his own servants, and delivereth unto them talents, to the end that they may trade therewith. After a long time, the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them, and to them that have done well He rendereth a reward of their labours, but that servant which was careless of his master’s work He condemneth.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

What other, then, is that man travelling into a far country but our Redeemer, Who is gone up from us into heaven in that Flesh Which He had taken into Himself? For the earth is the home of the Flesh, Which travelleth into a far country when our Redeemer giveth It a place in heaven. But that man travelling into a far country delivered unto his servants his goods and so doth our Redeemer give spiritual gifts unto His faithful people. “And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one.” There are five bodily senses that is, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. By the five talents therefore are signified the five senses, that is, outward knowledge. By the two, wit and work. And by the figure of the one talent, understanding, which is alone.

Presso Villa Reàle, nella Spagna, san Pasquàle, dell'Ordine dei Minori, Confessore, uomo di meravigliosa innocenza e penitenza, il quale dal Papa Leóne decimoterzo fu dichiarato celeste Patrono dei Congressi Eucaristici e delle Associazioni in onore della santissima Eucaristia.
A Noyon, in Frància, i santi Martiri Eràdio, Pàolo ed Aquilino, con altri due.
In Calcedónia i santi Martiri Solocóne e Compagni soldati, sotto l'Imperatore Massimiàno.
Ad Alessàndria i santi Martiri Adrióne, Vittóre e Basilla.
Nello stesso giorno santa Restitùta, Vergine e Martire, la quale, in Africa, sotto l'impero di Valeriàno, dal Giudice Prócolo tormentata in vari modi, e posta sopra una barchetta piena di pece e stoppa, per essere bruciata in mare, finalmente, mentre, appiccato il fuoco, le fiamme si rivolgevano contro gli accensori, in orazione rese lo spirito a Dio. Il suo corpo colla stessa barchetta fu condotto, per divino volere, all'isola d'Ischia, vicino a Nàpoli, nella Campania, e fu raccolto con grande venerazione dai Cristiani. Martyrology {anticipated}
May 17th 2026, the 30th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Villa Real, in the kingdom of Valencia, the holy Paschal, of the Order of Friars Minors, a man of wonderful innocency, and wonderful contrition.
At Pisa, in Tuscany, is commemorated the holy martyr Torpes. He was a great official in the house of Nero, and was one of those of whom the Apostle Paul writeth from the city of Rome unto the Philippians (iv. 22,) "All the Saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household." But later on, at the command of Satellicus, because of his belief in Christ, he was buffeted, grievously scourged, and thrown to beasts to be devoured; but he was not hurt thereby, and finished his testimony by being beheaded, upon the 29th day of April; but his feast day is kept upon the 17th day of May on account of the translation of his body.
On the same day, the holy Virgin and martyr Restituta. In the reign of the Emperor Valerian, Proculus, the judge in Africa, caused her to be tortured in diverse ways, and put into a ship with pitch and tow that she might burn on the sea, but when fire was put to it the flame turned upon them that kindled it. Restituta gave up her spirit to God in prayer, and, by the will of God, the ship containing her body came to shore in the island of Ischia, near Naples, where her remains were received with great worship by the Christians. In after-days the Emperor Constantine the Great caused a church to be built in her honour at Naples.
