Salvátor noster, dilectíssimi fratres, ascéndit in cælum: non ergo turbémur in terra. Ibi sit mens, et hic erit réquies. Ascendámus cum Christo ínterim corde: cum dies ejus promíssus advénerit, sequémur et córpore. Scire tamen debémus, fratres, quia cum Christo non ascéndit supérbia, non avarítia, non luxúria: nullum vítium nostrum ascéndit cum médico nostro. Sermone 2 sull'Ascensione del Signore, che è il 175 del Tempo
Il nostro Salvatore, fratelli dilettissimi, è asceso al cielo: non turbiamoci dunque punto noi sulla terra. La nostra mente sia là con lui, e qui avremo il riposo. Intanto col cuore ascendiamo con Cristo: quando verrà il suo giorno promesso, lo seguiremo anche col corpo. Però dobbiamo sapere, fratelli, che né la superbia, né l'avarizia, né la lussuria salgono con Cristo: nessun nostro vizio sale col medico nostro. Quindi se desideriamo seguire il medico nella sua ascensione, dobbiamo deporre i vizi e i peccati. Essi ci caricano, per dir così, di catene, e cercano di tenerci schiavi colle reti dei peccati: perciò noi, con l'aiuto di Dio, come dice il Salmista: «Spezziamo le loro catene» Ps. 2,3: affinché con sicurezza possiamo dire al Signore: «Tu hai spezzato le mie catene, ed io ti offrirò l'ostia di lode» Ps. 115,6.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. E tempo che me ne torni a colui che mi ha mandato, dice il Signore: non vogliate rattristarvi, né si turbi il vostro cuore:

La risurrezione del Signore è la nostra speranza: l'ascensione del Signore la nostra glorificazione. Quest'oggi celebriamo la solennità dell'ascensione. Se dunque noi celebriamo l'ascensione del Signore rettamente, fedelmente, divotamente, santamente e piamente, ascendiamo con lui, e teniamo in alto i cuori. Ma salendo, non insuperbiamo, né presumiamo dei nostri meriti, quasi ci fossero propri. Noi dobbiamo avere i cuori in alto uniti al Signore. Perché, avere il cuore in alto, ma non al Signore, è orgoglio: invece il cuore in alto al Signore, è rifugio. Osservate, fratelli, un fatto sorprendente. Dio è alto: tu t'innalzi, ed egli fugge da te; ti umili, e discende a te. Perché questo? Perché «egli è eccelso, eppure riguarda le umili cose, e le altiere mira da lungi» Ps. 137,6. Egli riguarda le cose umili dà vicino per innalzarle: e le cose altiere, cioè superbe, le mira da lungi per abbassarle.

Trattato 92 su Giovanni
Il Signore Gesù, nel discorso che tenne ai suoi discepoli dopo la cena, prossimo alla passione, allorché era per andarsene e lasciarli colla sua presenza corporale, sebbene dovesse però rimanere con tutti i suoi fino alla consumazione dei secoli colla presenza spirituale, li esortò a sopportare le persecuzioni degli empi, che designò col nome di mondo. Dal seno di questo stesso mondo egli aveva tratto i suoi discepoli: egli lo dichiarò loro, affinché sapessero che era la grazia di Dio che li faceva ciò che si trovavano essere; mentre i loro vizi li avevano resi ciò ch'erano stati per l'innanzi.

Quindi aggiunse, come conseguenza, queste parole che abbiamo cominciato a spiegare adesso: «Ma quando sarà venuto il Consolatore, ch'io vi manderò da parte del Padre, lo Spirito di verità, che procede dal Padre, egli renderà testimonianza di me: e anche voi mi renderete testimonianza, perché siete stati con me fin da principio» Joann. 15,24. Che relazione hanno queste parole con ciò che aveva detto: «Però adesso hanno veduto (le mie opere) e hanno odiato me e il Padre mio; tuttavia deve adempiersi la parola scritta nella loro legge: «Mi hanno odiato senza ragione?» Joann. 15,24-25. Quando venne il Paraclito, questo Spirito di verità, forse che convinse con una testimonianza più evidente coloro che avevano visto (le sue opere), e nondimeno lo avevano odiato? Fece anzi di più, perché manifestandosi ad essi, egli convertì alla fede, che opera mediante la carità, parecchi di quelli che avevano visto, e il cui odio perdurava ancora.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Saviour is gone up from us into heaven, but let us not be troubled on earth. Let only our heart be there with Him, and we shall have peace here. Let us in heart thither ascend with Christ in the mean while, and when that glad day which He hath promised cometh, our body will follow. But we must know, my brethren, that there are some things that cannot ascend with Christ pride cannot, nor covetousness, nor brutishness no one of our diseases can ascend thither where our Healer is. And, therefore, if we would follow our Healer, we must needs leave our diseases and sins behind us. All such things tie us down, as it were, with bands, and hamper us in the meshes of a net of sins but, with God's help, we will say with the Psalmist: “Let us break their bands asunder,” ii. 3, that we may be able honestly to say to the Lord: “Thou hast loosed my bonds, I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving.” cxv. 16, 17.

The Resurrection of the Lord is our hope the Ascension of the Lord is our glorification. To-day we keep the solemn holiday of the Ascension. If, therefore, our keeping of this holiday is to be a right, faithful, earnest, holy, godly keeping, we must in mind likewise ascend, and lift up our hearts unto the Lord. When we ascend we must not be high-minded, nor flatter ourselves with our good works, as though they were our own. We must lift up our hearts unto the Lord. When man's heart is lifted up, but not unto the Lord, such lifting-up is pride to lift up the heart unto the Lord, is to make the Most High our Refuge. Behold, my brethren, a great wonder. God is high, but if thou art lifted up He fleeth from thee, whereas, if thou humblest thyself, He cometh down to thee. Wherefore? “The Lord is high, yet hath He respect unto the lowly but the proud He knoweth from afar.” Ps. cxxxvii. 6. To the lowly He hath respect, that He may raise them up the proud He knoweth from afar, that He may thrust them down.

The Lord Jesus, in that discourse which He addressed to His disciples after the Last Supper, when He was on the very eve of the Passion, when He was, as it were, about to go away and leave them as touching His bodily Presence, albeit as touching His spiritual Presence, He is with us alway even unto the end of the world, Matth. xxviii. 20, in that discourse He exhorted them to bear patiently the persecution of wicked men, of whom He speaketh as “the world”, out of which world, nevertheless, He saith that He hath chosen even His disciples themselves, xv. 19, that they might know that it was by the grace of God that they were what they were, 1 Cor. xv. 10, whereas it was by their own sins that they had been what they had been.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 18 Maggio, Luna 1

A Camerino san Venanzio Martire, il quale, all'età di quindici anni, sotto l'Imperatore Décio ed il Preside Antioco, insieme con altri dieci, compì il corso del glorioso combattimento con la decapitazione.
A Ravénna il natale di san Giovanni primo. Papa e Martire; che dall'Ariano Re d'Italia Teodorico fu colà chiamato con inganno, e dove, a lungo torturato nel carcere per la fede ortodossa, finì di vivere. La sua festa si celebra il ventisette di questo mese, giorno nel quale il suo sacro corpo, trasportato a Roma, fu sepolto nella Basilica di san Piétro, Principe degli Apostoli.
A Spoléto san Felice Vescovo, che sotto l'Imperatore Massimiano conseguì la palma del martirio.
Ad Eracléa, nell'Egitto, san Potamóne Vescovo, il quale prima fu Confessore sotto Massimiano Galério; quindi, sotto l'Imperatore Costanzo e il Preside Ariano Filàgrio, fu coronato col martirio. Egli fu celebrato con somme lodi dai santi Padri della Chiesa Atanasio ed Epifanio.
In Egitto san Dióscoro Lettore, contro il quale il Preside usò molti e vari tormenti, fino a strappargli le unghie e abbruciargli i fianchi con fiaccole ardenti, ma i ministri, atterriti dallo splendore di una luce celeste, caddero a terra; finalmente lo stesso Dióscoro, bruciato con piastre infuocate, compì il martirio.
Ad Ankara, nella Galazia, san Teódoto Martire, e sette sante Vergini e Martiri, cioè Tecùsa, zia dello stesso Teódoto, Alessandra, Claudia, Faina, Eufràsia, Matròna e Giulitta. Queste furono prima esposte dal Preside in un luogo infame, ma per divina virtù rimasero intatte, poi con sassi legati al collo furono sommerse in una palude. Le loro reliquie, essendo state raccolte ed onorevolmente seppellite da Teódoto, questi perciò, preso dal Preside, fu crudelissimamente straziato, e finalmente, percosso colla spada, ricevette la corona del martirio.

At Camarino, in the neighbourhood of Ancona, the holy martyr Venantius, who, at fifteen years of age, under Decius the Emperor and Antiochus the President, along with ten others, finished the course of a glorious contention by being beheaded.
In Egypt, the holy Reader Dioscorus, upon whom the President practiced many and diverse tortures, so that he had his nails dug out, and his sides scarified with lamps, but a sudden light from heaven terrified the tormentors so that they fell down; lastly, he was roasted with hot plates of metal, and so finished his testimony.
At Spoleto, the holy Felix, Bishop [of Spello,] who gained the palm of martyrdom, under the Emperor Maximian.
In Egypt, the holy Potamion, Bishop [of Heraclea,] who was first a Confessor of the faith under the Emperor Maximian Gallerius, and afterwards crowned with martyrdom, under the Emperor Constantius and the Arian President Philagrius.
