Lettura 4
Venanzio di Camerino, a quindici anni accusato di professar la religione cristiana presso Antioco, allora governatore di Camerino sotto l'imperatore Decio, si presentò da se stesso al magistrato alle porte della città. Questi dopo averlo tentato lungamente con promesse e minacce, ordinò di batterlo con verghe e caricarlo di catene; ma, liberatone miracolosamente da un Angelo, è poi bruciato con torce accese e sospeso, colla testa in giù, a respirar fumo. Il Cancelliere Anastasio stupito della sua costanza nei tormenti, e vedendo che, sciolto di nuovo dall'Angelo, camminava, vestito di bianco, sul fumo, credé in Cristo: onde si fece battezzare con tutta la sua famiglia dal prete Porfirio, in compagnia del quale poco dopo riportò la palma del martirio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Venanzio ricondotto davanti al governatore, e inutilmente di nuovo da lui sollecitato ad abbandonare la fede di Cristo è gettato in carcere; dove gli è mandato l'araldo Attalo a dirgli anche lui essere stato cristiano, ma d'aver rinunziato a questo nome perché aveva conosciuto la vana illusione d'una fede in omaggio alla quale i Cristiani si privan, dei beni presenti nella speranza chimerica dei futuri. Ma il nobile atleta di Cristo, non ignaro delle insidie del perfido nemico, respinse lungi da sé il ministro del diavolo. Quindi ricondotto davanti al governatore, gli vennero rotti tutti i denti e spezzate le mascelle; e, così concio, venne gettato su d'un letamaio. Ma liberatone ancora dall'Angelo, è ricondotto di nuovo dal giudice; il quale alla voce di Venanzio che parlava ancora, cadde dal suo seggio, e gridando«Il Dio di Venanzio è il vero, distruggete i nostri dèi », spirò.

Lettura 6
Risaputo ciò, il governatore ordinò subito che Venanzio fosse esposto ai leoni; i quali, smessa la loro naturale ferocia, si accovacciarono ai suoi piedi. Intanto egli insegnava al popolo la fede di Cristo. Onde fu portato via di là, e messo di nuovo in prigione. L'indomani Porfirio avendo raccontato al governatore una visione avuta nella notte, nella quale aveva visto Venanzio risplendente di vivissima luce battezzare il popolo, ed il governatore invece ricoperto di caligine oscurissima, il governatore, acceso d'ira, ordina di troncargli immediatamente la testa, e poi fa strascinare Venanzio fino alla sera per luoghi coperti di spine e di cardi. Il quale abbandonato mezzo morto, il mattino appresso si presenta di nuovo al governatore, che lo fa tosto precipitare da una rupe. Ma salvato ancora una volta miracolosamente, è di nuovo trascinato per luoghi aspri fino a mille passi; là, i soldati soffrendo una sete ardente, Venanzio si inginocchia su d'un sasso nella vicina valle e ne fa scaturire, con un segno di croce, dell'acqua, lasciando su di quello l'impronta delle sue ginocchia, come si può vedere tuttora nella sua chiesa. Tocchi da questo miracolo, molti soldati credettero in Cristo, ai quali tutti il governatore fece troncare la testa insieme con Venanzio nel medesimo luogo. In quel momento ci furono temporali e terremoti così grandi, che il governatore fuggì; ma non poté sfuggire la giustizia divina, perché dopo pochi giorni fece una vergognosissima morte. Frattanto i Cristiani seppellirono Venanzio e gli altri in luogo onorevole: ed i loro corpi si conservano tuttora nella chiesa di Camerino dedicata a Venanzio.

Questo tratto del Vangelo, o fratelli, in cui il Signore afferma essere egli la vite e i suoi discepoli i tralci, si deve intendere nel senso che egli, Gesù Cristo, uomo, mediatore tra Dio e gli uomini, è il capo della Chiesa e noi le sue membra. Ora la vite e i tralci sono della stessa natura. Perciò egli, essendo Dio, della cui natura noi non siamo, si fece uomo affinché la natura umana fosse in lui come una vite, di cui anche noi uomini potessimo essere i tralci.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Che cosa significa dunque: «Io sono la vera vite»? Forse, aggiungendo «vera», si è riferito per opposizione a quella vite da cui è stata presa questa similitudine? Infatti, egli si dice vite per similitudine, non in senso proprio, come si dice pecora, agnello, leone, roccia, pietra angolare e simili; questi sono più veri di quella, perché da essi sono dedotte le similitudini, non le proprietà. Ma quando dice: «Io sono la vera vite», certamente vuole distinguersi da quella cui fu detto: «Come ti sei trasformata in amarezza, vite straniera?». Infatti, in che modo può essere vite vera quella da cui si è aspettato che producesse uva ed invece ha prodotto delle spine?

Lettura 9
«Io sono, dice, la vera vite, e il Padre mio è l'agricoltore». Sono forse una stessa cosa la vite e l'agricoltore? Cristo è la vite se si ha riguardo alla sua natura che gli permette di dire: «Il Padre è più grande di me». Se invece si pensa alla natura che gli fa dire: «Io e il Padre siamo una cosa sola» egli è anche agricoltore; e non lo è come lo sono quelli che eseguono il loro. lavoro operando dall'esterno; ma lo è in modo tale da dare anche un incremento interiore. Infatti « né chi pianta, né chi innaffia, è qualche cosa, ma chi dà un incremento, cioè Dio ». Ma Cristo è certamente Dio, perché il Verbo era Dio; per cui egli e il Padre sono una cosa sola. E se il Verbo si è fatto uomo, che prima non era, rimane però quello che era.

Venantius was a lad of Camerino (in the neighbourhood of Ancona,) who at fifteen years of age was accused of Christianity before Antiochus, Praefect of Camerino under the Emperor Decius. Venantius therefore appeared before Antiochus at the gate of the city, and when the Praefect had striven with him for a long while, by promises and threats, he commanded him to be scourged and thrown into irons, but an Angel loosed his bonds. He was afterwards scarified with lamps, and hung head downwards in smoke. Anastasius the trumpeter was amazed at his hardiness under suffering, and when it appeared to him that the Martyr was a second time loosed by an Angel, and was walking in white raiment on the smoke, he believed in Christ, and was baptized, with all his house, by the blessed Priest Porphyry, and a little while after they both together earned the palm of martyrdom.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Now Venantius stood before the Praefect, and when he had again vainly tempted him to give up his faith in Christ, he cast him into prison, and sent unto him Attalus the crier. Attalus told him how that he also had been a Christian, but had denied that name, seeing it was a foolish faith which made Christians to throw away things present for a groundless hope of things to come. But Christ's brave champion, well knowing the wiles of our subtle enemy, drove the devil's servant from his presence. When he appeared again before the Praefect, his teeth and jaws were broken, and so mangled he was cast out upon a dunghill. But thence also an Angel delivered him, and he stood again before the judge. And there while Venantius was yet speaking, the judge fell from off the judgment-seat, and when he had cried with a loud voice, “Venantius, his God is true, take away our gods,” he died.

Then they told the President of it, he commanded Venantius to be straightway thrown to the lions. But the beasts were not wild to him, and lay down at his feet. And meanwhile he taught the Christian faith to the people. So they took him away from thence and cast him once more into prison. The next day Porphyry came to the President, and told him how that he had seen in a vision of the night Venantius sprinkling certain ones with water, and they that were sprinkled shone with a marvellous light, and the President himself hidden in deep darkness. Then the President was moved to great anger and commanded forthwith to behead Porphyry. As for Venantius, he bade them drag him about in rough places, full of briars and thistles, until the evening. When it was over, he was left half dead, but in the morning he stood for the last time before the President, who commanded to cast him down from a steep rock. It pleased God that this should not kill him, and he was haled again through rough places for about a mile. There the soldiers were athirst, and Venantius, by the sign of the Cross, made waters to flow from a stone in a gulley hard by. This is that stone whereon also he left the imprint of his knees, and which can be seen to this day in his Church. By this wonder many were moved to believe in Christ and the President commanded them all, and Venantius with them, to be beheaded in the same place where they were. When it was done there were great lightnings and earthquakes, so that the President fled, but he could not fly from the judgment of God, and but a few days thereafter he died a most shameful death. Meanwhile the Christians took the bodies of Venantius and the others, and buried them in an honourable place, wherein they lie to this day, under the Church at Camerino which is dedicated to Venantius.

Dearly beloved brethren, this passage of the Gospel, wherein the Lord saith that He is the vine, and that His disciples are the branches, is to be taken in that sense wherein it is also said, that He is the Head of the Church, Eph. v. 23, and that we are the members of Him 30 Who is the Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus 1 Tim. ii. 5. The vine and his branches are of one and the same nature. Therefore, seeing that He was God, of which nature we are not, He was made man, to the end that He might have in Himself this vine, that is, the manhood, whereof we men can be made branches.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Why saith He: I am the true vine? As touching this word true, hath He not here regard to that other parable of a vine, the like figure whereto He doth here apply to Himself? Jer. ii. 21. Here is He called a vine, not plainly, but in parable, as also He is called elsewhere a sheep, Isa. liii. 7, Acts viii. 32, a lamb, John i. 36, a lion, Apoc. v. 5, a rock, 1 Cor. x. 4, a corner-stone, ~Eph. ii. 20, and other things of the like kind. But these things are in themselves that which they seem to be, albeit He is called by their names, not plainly, but in a parable, and herein are they different from that vine, whereof in this place He taketh on Him the name. For when He saith: I am the true vine, doth He not make distinction between Himself, and that which indeed seemed to be a vine, but to which it is said: How art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto Me? Jer. ii. 21. For by what title shall that plant be called other than a false vine, whereto they looked that she should bring forth grapes, and she brought forth thorns?

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 19 Maggio, Luna 2

Il natale di san Piétro di Morène Confessore, il quale, da Anacoreta fu eletto Sommo Pontefice, e si chiamò Celestino quinto. Ma poi rinunciò al Papato, e conducendo vita religiosa nella solitudine, illustre per virtù e per miracoli, passò al Signore.
A Roma santa Pudenziàna Vergine, la quale dopo innumerevoli combattimenti, dopo aver dato riverentemente sepoltura a molti Martiri ed aver distribuito per Cristo tutte le sue sostanze ai poveri, finalmente dalla terra se ne volò al cielo.
Nello stesso luogo san Pudénte Senatore, padre della stessa santa Pudenziàna e di santa Prasséde Vergine. Dopo di essere stato dagli Apostoli rivestito di Cristo nel battesimo, conservò immacolata la veste dell'innocenza fino al termine della vita.
Così pure a Roma, sulla via Appia, il natale dei santi Calógero e Parténio eunuchi. Il primo era maestro di camera della moglie dell'Imperatore Décio, l'altro primicerio di un altro ufficio : ambedue non volendo sacrificare agli idoli, per ordine del medesimo Imperatore, furono tormentati con vari e crudeli supplizi, e finalmente, percossi nel capo con un palo infuocato, resero lo spirito a Dio.
A Nicomédia san Filótero Martire, figlio del Proconsole Paciàno; sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziano, dopo aver molto sofferto, ricevette la corona del martirio.
Nello stesso luogo sei sante Vergini e Martiri, di cui la principale era Ciriaca, la quale, avendo liberamente rimproverato di empietà Massimiano, fu crudelissimamente percossa e squartata, e alla fine, arsa col fuoco, compì il martirio.
A Canterbury, in Inghiltérra, san Dunstàno Vescovo.
A Louannec, nella Bretagna, sant'Ivo, Prete e Confessore, che, per amore di Cristo, difendeva le cause dei pupilli, delle vedove e dei poveri.

May 19th 2026, the 2nd day of the Moon,

On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury.
On the same 19th day of May, were born into the better life:

Holy Peter Morone, who was a hermit when he was created Supreme Pontiff, and was called Celestine V. He resigned the Papacy and led a religious life in solitude, and so, famous for graces and wonders, passed away, [in the year 1296,] to be for ever with the Lord. His feast we keep upon the 21st day of this same month of May.
At Rome, the holy Virgin Pudentiana, who, after countless contendings, after worshipfully burying many martyrs, and after distributing all her goods to feed the poor for Christ's sake, at length passed from earth to heaven.
There also the holy Senator Pudens, the father of the said virgin. He put on Christ in baptism by the ministry of the Apostles, and kept his robe in innocency undefiled till he received the crown of life.
At Rome also, upon the Appian Way, the holy eunuchs Calocerus and Parthenius. Calocerus was master of the bed-chamber to the wife of the Emperor Decius, and Parthenius was one of the chief officers of the court, and Decius slew them both because they would not sacrifice to idols.
At Nicomedia, the holy martyr Philoter, son of the Pro-Consul Pacian, who suffered much under the Emperor Diocletian, and received the crown of martyrdom.
There also six holy Virgin martyrs, of whom the chiefest was Cyriaca, who boldly rebuked Maximian for his wickedness, and therefore was most direfully rent and torn, and at last burnt with fire.
In Brittany, [in the year 1303,] the holy Priest and Confessor Yves, who for the love of Christ pled the cause of orphans, widows, and the poor.
