Dalla prima lettera dell'Apostolo san Giovanni
1 Giov 4:1-6
1 Carissimi, non vogliate credere a ogni spirito, ma provate gli spiriti, se sono da Dio; perché molti falsi profeti s'aggirano per il mondo.
2 Lo spirito di Dio si riconosce da questo: ogni spirito che confessa che Gesù Cristo è venuto nella carne, esso è da Dio:
3 Ogni spirito invece che divide Gesù, non è da Dio, ma è un anticristo, di cui avete sentito che viene, anzi è già fin d'ora nel mondo.
4 Voi, figlietti, siete da Dio e avete vinto colui, perché chi è in voi, è più potente di chi sta nel mondo.
5 Essi sono del mondo: perciò parlano di mondo, e il mondo li ascolta:
6 Noi siamo da Dio. Chi conosce Dio, ci ascolta; chi non è da Dio, non ci ascolta: da ciò distinguiamo lo spirito di verità dallo spirito di errore.

℟. Dopo la sua passione apparve loro per quaranta giorni e parlò del regno di Dio, alleluia:

1 Giov 4:7-14
7 Carissimi, amiamoci l'un l'altro, perché la carità è da Dio; e chi ama, è nato da Dio e conosce Dio.
8 Chi non ama, non ha conosciuto Dio; perché Dio è carità.
9 La carità di Dio per noi si è manifestata in questo, che Dio ha mandato il suo unico Figlio nel mondo, affinché noi avessimo la vita per mezzo di lui.
10 E tale carità sta in ciò: che non siamo noi che abbiamo amato Dio, ma è lui che per il primo ha amato noi e ha mandato il suo Figlio qual vittima per i nostri peccati.
11 Carissimi, se Dio ha così amato noi, anche noi dobbiamo amarci l'un l'altro.
12 Nessuno ha mai veduto Dio. Ma se ci amiamo l'un l'altro, Dio dimora in noi e il suo amore è in noi nel modo più perfetto.
13 Noi conosciamo che dimoriamo in lui e che egli dimora in noi, da questo che egli ci ha fatto parte del suo Spirito.
14 Per conto nostro abbiam visto e attestiamo che il Padre ha mandato il suo Figlio qual Salvatore del mondo.

1 Giov 4:15-21
15 Chiunque confesserà che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio, Dio dimora in lui, ed egli in Dio.
16 Quanto a noi, abbiamo conosciuto l'amore che Dio ha per noi e ci abbiamo creduto. Dio è carità, e chi dimora nella carità, dimora in Dio, e Dio in lui.
17 La perfezione dell'amore di Dio in noi consiste in questo, che noi nutriamo piena fiducia per il giorno del giudizio: perché quale è lui, tali siamo pure noi in questo mondo.
18 Nell'amore non esiste timore: anzi l'amore perfetto caccia via il timore, perché il timore suppone un castigo: e chi teme non è perfetto nell'amore.
19 Noi dunque amiamo Dio, poiché Dio ci ha amati per il primo.
20 Se uno dirà: Io amo Dio, e odia il suo fratello, è un bugiardo. Perché chi non ama il suo fratello, che vede, come può amare Dio che non vede?
21 E poi il comandamento che abbiamo ricevuto da Dio è questo: «Che chi ama Dio, deve amare anche il proprio fratello» Joann. 13,34.

Lettura 4
Pietro, detto Celestino dal nome che prese da Papa, nacque da parenti onesti e cattolici a Isernia nell'Abruzzo, e appena adolescente, si ritirò nella solitudine per preservare l'anima dalle seduzioni del mondo. Là nutriva lo spirito di contemplazioni, riduceva il corpo in servitù, portava una catena di ferro sulla nuda carne. Istituì sotto la regola di san Benedetto la Congregazione detta poi dei Celestini. Quindi, come lucerna posta sul candelabro, non potendo rimaner nascosto (essendo la Chiesa Romana rimasta lungo tempo senza pastore), a sua insaputa e benché lontano fu chiamato sulla cattedra di Pietro, riempiendo tutti di stupore non meno che di gioia per la novità. Innalzato alla sublimità del pontificato, vedendo che la moltitudine degli affari gli permetteva appena di darsi alle sue meditazioni, egli rinunziò volontariamente alla carica e all'onore. Così ripreso l'antico tenore di vita, s'addormentò nel Signore, e la sua bella morte fu resa ancor più gloriosa per l'apparizione d'una croce luminosa che si vide brillare nell'aria, davanti alla porta della sua dimora. Egli divenne illustre per molti miracoli così in vita che dopo morte; i quali giuridicamente esaminati, Clemente V l'iscrisse nel numero dei Santi undici anni dopo la sua morte.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:
* la mia mano lo assisterà, alleluia.

Dal libro dei Morali di san Gregorio Papa.
Lib. 10. cap. 16. al cap. 12. di Giobbe.
La semplicità del giusto sarà derisa. La sapienza di questo mondo consiste: nel nascondere il cuore con ogni astuzia, nell'occultare colle parole il pensiero; nel far vedere vero ciò che è falso, e nel mostrare falso ciò che è vero. Questa sapienza certo i giovani l'acquistano coll'uso, i fanciulli l'apprendono col denaro quelli che la posseggono, insuperbiscono e disprezzano gli altri; quelli che non la conoscono, sottomessi e timidi l'ammirano negli altri; perché essi amano questa iniqua doppiezza, mascherata di altro nome, venendo qualificata urbanità siffatta perversità di spirito. Questa sapienza mondana insegna ai suoi discepoli a ricercare il colmo degli onori, a gioire vanamente dall'acquisto di una gloria temporale, a rendere abbondantemente agli altri il male ricevutone; a non cedere mai, finché le forze assistono, a chi fa opposizione; e, quando manca il coraggio, a dissimulare, sotto apparenza di bontà e dolcezza, l'impotenza della loro malizia.

Lettura 6
La sapienza dei giusti al contrario consiste: nel non agire mai per ostentazione, nel dire ciò che si pensa, nell'amare il vero com'è, nell'evitare il falso, nel far il bene gratuitamente, nel soffrire il male molto volentieri piuttosto che farlo, nel non cerca vendetta dell'ingiuria, nello stimare un guadagno l'oltraggio che si sostiene per la verità. Ma questa semplicità dei giusti viene derisa; poiché i sapienti di questo mondo credono una sciocchezza la virtù della sincerità. Tutto ciò infatti che si fa innocentemente, senza dubbio essi lo stimano stoltezza e tutto ciò che ha l'impronta delle verità nelle (nostre) opere, suona stoltezza alla sapienza carnale. Infatti che di più stupido agli occhi del mondo che manifestare il proprio pensiero quando si parla, non simulare niente con abili espedienti, non ripagare gli affronti con ingiurie, pregare per quelli che ci maledicono, cercare la povertà, abbandonare i propri beni, non resistere a chi ci deruba, offrire l'altra guancia a chi ci percuote?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e tutta la terra è ripiena della sua dottrina:

Sermone 2, nell'anniversario della sua ascesa, prima di metà
Come ci riferisce la lettura evangelica. Gesù lui interrogò i discepoli che cosa pensassero di in mezzo a tanti pareri diversi. E san Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente». Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. E a te darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli, e qualunque cosa avrai legata sulla terra, sarà legata anche nei cieli, e qualun que cosa avrai sciolta sulla terra, sarà sciolta anche nei cieli». L»ordine stabilito da Gesù Cristo rimane ancora; e san Pietro, che ha conservato fino ad oggi la solidità della pietra, non abbandonò mai il governo della Chiesa di cui fu incaricato.

Lettura 8
Nella Chiesa intera, infatti, ogni giorno Pietro dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; ed ogni lingua che riconosce il Signore viene istruita col magistero di tale voce. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Con tali disposizioni dunque, dilettissimi, e con razionale ossequio si celebri la festività odierna: affinché nell'umiltà della mia persona venga riconosciuto e onoralo colui, nel quale continua la cura che tutti i pastori hanno nella custodia delle pecore loro affidate e la cui dignità non viene meno per l'indegnità dell'erede.

Commemorazione: S. Pudenziana Vergine
Pudenziana vergine, figlia del Romano Pudente, perduti i genitori, consacratasi con ammirabile pietà alla pratica della religione cristiana, d'accordo colla sorella Prassede distribuì ai poveri il denaro ricavato dalla vendita del patrimonio, dandosi tutta ai digiuni e all'orazione. Per opera sua, tutta la sua famiglia, composta di novantasei persone, fu battezzata dal Pontefice Pio. L'imperatore Antonino avendo proibito ai Cristiani di offrire pubblicamente il sacrificio, il Pontefice Pio celebrava i Santi Misteri in presenza dei Cristiani nella casa di Pudenziana. Ed ella li riceveva con grande bontà, e forniva loro il necessario alla vita. Così se ne morì nel compimento di questi doveri di pietà cristiana, e fu sepolta nella tomba del padre nel cimitero di Priscilla sulla via Salaria, il 19 Maggio.

This Peter, who is called Peter Celestine, because when he became Pope he did so under the title of Celestine V, was the son of respectable Catholic parents, and was born at Isernia in Apulia, about the year of grace 1221. He was hardly entered on boyhood, when he withdrew into a desert, in order to keep his soul safe from the snares of the world. In solitude he fed his mind with heavenly meditation, and brought his body into subjection, even by wearing an iron chain next to his bare flesh. He founded, under the Rule of St. Benedict, that congregation which was afterwards known as the Celestine. His light, as of a candle set upon a candlestick, could not be kept hidden, and after the Church of Rome had for a long while been widowed of a shepherd, he was chosen without his knowledge and in his absence, to fill the chair of Peter. The news of his election filled himself with as great amazement, as it did all others with sudden joy. When, however, he was seated in the exalted place of the Papal dignity, he found that the many cares by which he was beset made it well-nigh impossible for him to give himself to his accustomed meditations after four months, of his own free will he resigned the burden and the honour together (on the 13th day of December, 1294); and, while he sought to return to his old way of life, on the 19th day of May, 1296, he fell asleep in the Lord. How precious his death was in His sight was gloriously manifested by a Cross which appeared shining in the air before the door of the cell. He was illustrious for miracles both during his life and after his death, and when these had been duly investigated, Clement V., in the eleventh year after his departure hence, enrolled his name among those of the Saints.

From the Book of Moral Reflections upon Job, written by Pope St. Gregory the Great
(Bk. x Chap. xvi on Job xii)
The simplicity of the righteous is made a subject of derision. The wisdom of this world hideth our true feelings by artifice, and useth language to conceal our thoughts this is the wisdom which demonstrated the truth of falsehood, and showeth the falsehood of the truth. This kind of shrewdness the young acquire by practice, and children pay for the learning it. Those who are good at this look down upon their neighbours those who are bad at it are humble and timid, and wonder at it in others they regard this astuteness too, wrong though it be, with wistful admiration, under softened epithets. Un-straightforwardness is called good breeding. The principles of the world teach those who entertain them, to try and rise to distinction, and when they have attained the bubble of glory which is so soon to pass away, to feel it sweet to have at their feet them on whom they may wreak rich revenge. These principles teach a man, as long as he is strong enough, to give way to nobody else, and, if he hath no chance by force, to try and attain his object by diplomacy.

They seek to avoid deception, to give their thoughts a clear expression in their words, to love the truth because it is the truth, to avoid falsehood, and rather to suffer than to inflict evil. Such are they who seek not to avenge themselves for wrong, and deem it gain to be despised for the truth's sake. This their simplicity is made a subject of derision, for such as are wise in this world believe the purity of their virtue to be simple foolery. Whatsoever is done innocently, they consider without doubt stupid. Such works as the truth approveth are idiotic, when tried by carnal standards of wisdom. After all, what stupider thing is there in this world than to express our real thoughts in our words, to keep nothing quiet by skilful tact, to repay no injuries, to pray for them which curse us, to seek poverty, to give up property, to strive not with such as take from us, to turn the other cheek to the smiter

When the Lord, as we read in the Gospel, asked his disciples who did men, amid their diverse speculations, believe him the Son of Man to be, blessed Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And the Lord answered and said unto him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father, which is in heaven: and I say also unto thee: That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it; and I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Commemoration of: St. Pudentiana, Virgin
The maiden Pudentiana was the orphan daughter of Pudens the Roman Senator. She was a Christian of eminent godliness. She with her sister Praxedes distributed to the poor the money which they obtained by the sale of their inheritance. She gave herself continually to fasting and prayer. By her care the whole of the household, being ninety-six persons, were baptized by Pope Pius. Whereas the Emperor Antonine had forbidden the Christians to offer sacrifice in public, Pope Pius used to meet with them in Pudentiana's house, to celebrate the holy rites. She was a gracious hostess to them, and ministered to them in such things as are needful for the body. She thus busied herself in works of Christian godliness until she passed from this present life to a better. She was buried in her father's sepulchre in the cemetery of Priscilla on the Salarian Way upon the 19th day of May.

At Nimes, in Gaul, the holy martyr Baudelius. He was apprehended and would not sacrifice, and so remaining inmovable amidst stripes and torments, grasped the palm of martyrdom by a death precious in the sight of the Lord.
At Edessa, in Syria, the holy martyrs Thalalaeus, Asterius, Alexander, and their companions, who suffered under the Emperor Numerian.
