Misericórdia vero in páuperes fuit insígnis. Lettura 4
Bernardino Albizésca, nato da nobile famiglia di Siena, fino dall'infanzia diede indizi non oscuri di santità; poiché educato con gran cura dai pii parenti, noncurante dei giuochi puerili, si vide fra i primi studi della grammatica dedicarsi alle opere di pietà, al digiuno, alla preghiera, e soprattutto al culto della beatissima Vergine. La sua carità verso i poveri era mirabile. Più tardi per poter praticare meglio tutte queste cose, volle essere ascritto nel numero dei servi di Dio nell'ospedale di santa Maria della Scala in Siena, donde uscirono molti personaggi illustri per santità Là, la cura degli infermi, durante una peste che infierì crudelmente, gli diede occasione di mortificare il suo corpo e d'esercitare una carità incredibile. Fra le altre virtù poi serbò, nonostante la bellezza delle forme, santissimamente la castità, così che neppure il più licenzioso osava pronunziare in sua presenza parola men che onesta.

Lettura 5
Provato da grave malattia, sopportata pazientissimamente per quattro mesi, appena guarito, concepì il disegno d'abbracciare la vita religiosa. Per facilitarsi la via, affittò una casetta alla estremità della città; dove visse nascosto, menando la vita più austera, e pregando Dio continuamente di fargli conoscere il partito che doveva prendere. Quindi in seguito a rivelazione divina scelse fra tutti l'ordine di san Francesco, distinguendosi per umiltà e pazienza e in tutte le altre religiose virtù. Il superiore del convento avendolo notato, e sapendo già della scienza e della perizia di Bernardino nelle sacre lettere, gli impose l'obbligo della predicazione: ed egli accettatolo umilissimamente, sebbene vi si conoscesse poco adatto per la voce esile e fioca, implorato il soccorso di Dio, si sentì miracolosamente liberato da siffatto impedimento.

Lettura 6
Erano quelli per l'Italia tempi pieni di vizi e delitti, e di fazioni cruente, calpestate tutte le leggi divine ed umane: Bernardino percorrendo città e villaggi, nel nome di Gesù, che aveva sempre sulla bocca e nel cuore, colla parola e coll'esempio ristabilì in gran parte la pietà e i costumi scomparsi. Onde avvenne, che illustri città lo domandassero al Papa per loro vescovo; carica ch'egli ricusò costantissimamente con invincibile umiltà. Infine l'uomo di Dio sfinito da immense fatiche, dopo aver fatti molti e grandi miracoli e scritti anche libri dotti e pii, terminò santamente la sua vita di 66 anni ad Aquila nell'Abruzzo. Celebre per nuovi miracoli, sei anni dopo la sua morte il sommo Pontefice Nicolò V lo iscrisse nel novero dei Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.

Reading 4
This Bernardine was born of the noble family of the Albizeschi, in the Republic of Siena, on the 8th of September, in the year 1380. His saintliness began to manifest itself from his earliest years. He was well brought up by a godly father and mother, and even when he was being taught the first rudiments of worldly learning, he used to give up his play-time to occupy himself with devout works, being much drawn to fasting, prayer, and the devotion to the most Blessed Virgin. He abounded likewise in tenderness for the poor. As time went on, that he might the more entirely do these things, it was his will to enroll himself among those who work in the Hospital of Blessed Mary, called “of the Ladder,” at Sienna. There, during the raging of an horrible distemper, he laboured with marvellous charity and great bodily suffering, in serving the sick. In bodily presence he was a very goodly person, but, with all his other virtues, he kept ever so holy a guard over his purity, that it soon came to pass that no one, however shameless, dared to say an unseemly word in his presence.

He suffered a severe sickness, and when, after bearing it with the utmost patience, he recovered his health, he began to think of embracing some institute of the religious life. To make his way sure, he built a little hut in the outskirts of the city, where he hid himself and led a life of hardships of all kinds, continuing instant in prayer to God that He would be pleased to make clear to him what path he should follow. And so it came to pass by God's will that he chose the Order of Blessed Francis. In that Order he shone a bright instance of lowliness, long-suffering, and every other grace of a religious man. When the superior of his convent saw this, and had already considered what his teaching and knowledge of sacred learning were, he laid on Bernardine the duty of preaching. This the Saint humbly accepted, and finding that his usefulness was much impaired by his having a shrill, harsh voice, he betook him to implore the help of God, Who was pleased, not without a miracle, to free him from this drawback.

Those were times fruitful in vices and crimes and the bloody civil wars which raged in Italy confounded all things Divine and human. Bernardine went through the cities and towns, and, in the Name of Jesus, that Name which he ever bore upon his lips and in his heart, he prevailed in great measure by his word and example, in setting up falling godliness and morality. Illustrious cities demanded him from the Pope as their Bishop, but this was an honour which his unconquerable humility caused him always steadily to refuse. At last the man of God, after untold labours, the working of many and great miracles, and the writing of godly and learned books, in the 67th year of his age, at Aquila in the Abruzzi, rested in a blessed death, upon the 20th day of May 1444. As the fame of new signs and wonders increased day by day, Pope Nicholas V., in the sixth year after his death, added his name to the roll of the Saints.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Peter Morone, who was a hermit when he was created Supreme Pontiff, and was called Celestine V. He resigned the Papacy and led a religious life in solitude, and so, famous for graces and wonders, passed away to be for ever with the Lord. Of him mention is made upon the 19th of this same month of May.
