Stefano introdusse in Ungheria la fede di Cristo e il titolo di re. Ottenuta dal Romano Pontefice la corona reale, e consacrato re per ordine di lui, fece omaggio del regno alla Sede apostolica. Con pietà e munificenza ammirabile fondò vari stabilimenti ospedalieri a Roma, Gerusalemme, Costantinopoli; in Ungheria l'arcivescovado di Strigonia e dieci vescovadi. Venerando Cristo nei poveri, egli era ugualmente amorevole e liberale con essi, e non rimandò mai alcuno senza averlo consolato e soccorso; anzi dopo aver distribuito somme ingenti in sollievo della loro indigenza, sovente si vide dare ancora, con estrema benignità, il mobilio del suo palazzo. Inoltre era solito di lavare colle sue mani i piedi ai poveri, e di visitare la notte, solo e senza farsi conoscere, gli ospedali, di servire i malati, e prestare tutti gli altri uffici di carità. A testimonianza delle quali virtù, mentre il resto del corpo andò in polvere, la sua destra rimase incorrotta.

L'amore della preghiera lo portava a vegliare la più gran parte delle notti; e, fisso nella contemplazione delle cose celesti, lo si vide più volte rapito in estasi e sollevato da terra. Col soccorso della preghiera scampò più d'una volta miracolosamente alle cospirazioni di ribelli e agli attacchi di nemici potenti. Dal suo matrimonio con Gisella di Baviera, sorella dell'imperatore sant'Enrico, avuto un figlio, Emerico, lo allevò con tanta cura e con sì solida pietà, che poi divenne celebre per la sua santità. Condusse sì bene gli affari del suo regno, che, circondatosi di uomini d'una prudenza e santità consumata, non decise mai nulla senza il loro parere; mentre nella cenere e nel cilizio domandava a Dio con umilissime preghiere, la grazia di vedere, prima di morire, tutto il regno d'Ungheria cattolico; così che il suo grandissimo zelo nel propagare la fede gli meritò il nome di Apostolo di quella nazione, e il Romano Pontefice gli concesse la facoltà per sé e per i suoi successori di farsi precedere dalla croce.

Animato da ardentissima devozione verso la Madre di Dio, costruì una vastissima chiesa in suo onore, e la dichiarò patrona dell'Ungheria; e la Vergine l'introdusse a sua volta in cielo il giorno medesimo della sua Assunzione, giorno che gli Ungheresi chiamano il giorno della Gran Signora, come aveva stabilito il santo re. Il suo corpo, che mandò un soavissimo odore e diede un liquore celeste, per ordine del Romano Pontefice fu poi trasferito in luogo più conveniente e riposto con maggior onore in mezzo a numerosi miracoli d'ogni genere. Il sommo Pontefice Innocenzo XI ne fissò la festa al 2 Settembre per l'insigne vittoria riportata, col soccorso di Dio, lo stesso giorno sui Turchi nell'assedio di Budapest dall'esercito di Leopolo Ieletto imperatore dei Romani e re d'Ungheria.

È un buon ordine che colui che avrebbe chiamato le genti e comandato che i seguaci della religione rabbinica periscano, premettesse questa comparazione, perché non si dicesse: non aveva dato nulla al popolo dei Giudei per cui potesse migliorarsi? perché si esige da colui che nulla ricevette? Questa non è una mina da poco, sopra la quale la donna evangelica, poiché non l'ha trovata, ha acceso la lucerna, cerca, avendo avvicinato il lume, e si rallegra di aver trovato.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Pertanto da una singola mina uno ne fece dieci, un altro cinque. Forse questi aveva la moralità, perché cinque sono i sensi del corpo: quello il doppio, cioè la misticità della legge e la moralità della virtù. Onde anche Matteo pose cinque talenti e due talenti: in modo che ci sia la moralità nei cinque talenti, nei due entrambi, il mistico ed il morale. Così ciò che è inferiore di numero è di fatto più fecondo.

E qui possiamo interpretare le dieci mine come le dieci parole, cioè, la dottrina della legge; ma cinque mine, gli insegnamenti della disciplina. Se voglio essere un perfetto esperto della legge in ogni cosa; non infatti solo nel parlare ma nella virtù è il regno di Dio. Ma bene, poiché parla dei Giudei, solo due riportano il denaro moltiplicato, con gli interessi non certo di metallo ma della amministrazione. Altro è infatti è l'interesse del denaro prestato, altro quello della dottrina celeste.

Reading 4
This Stephen was the son of Geysa, fourth Duke of the Hungarians, and was born at Gran in the year 977. He it was who first gave to Hungary the faith of Christ and the name of a kingdom. He obtained the Kingly crown from the Bishop of Rome, and being by command of the same anointed King, he made an offering of his kingdom to the Apostolic See. With wonderful devotion and bounty he founded diverse godly houses at Rome, Jerusalem, and Constantinople, and in Hungary the Archbishopric of Gran and ten other Sees. Toward the poor he had the same love and bounty. He greeted them as though they were Christ Himself, and never sent any one away sorrowing and empty. He spent vast sums in relieving their poverty, and also often parted among them with exceeding tenderness even the furniture of his house. Moreover it was his use to wash the feet of the poor with his own hands, and to go in the night, alone and unknown, to the hospitals, and to wait on them that lay there, and show them other deeds of kindness. It was the reward of these good works that, when the rest of his body decayed, his right hand remained uncorrupt.

He passed almost whole nights in earnest prayer, and when totally rapt in the thought of heavenly things, he sometimes became beside himself, and was seen to rise off the ground into the air. In more than one instance he strangely escaped through the power of prayer from rebellion, treason, and the onslaughts of mighty foes. He married Gisela of Bavaria, sister to the holy Emperor Henry, and begat on her Emeric, whom he trained up in such manners and godliness, as are shown by his also becoming a Saint. To carry on the business of his kingdom, he gathered together from all quarters the most learned and godly men, and took nothing in hand without their advice. Meanwhile he entreated of God by the most lowly supplications, offered up in sack-cloth and ashes, that, before he departed this life, he might see all Hungary Catholic. On account of his excellent zeal for the spread of the Faith he is called the Apostle of that nation, and the Bishop of Rome gave to him and to his successors the right to have a Cross carried before them.

Reading 6
He had a burning zeal to honour the Mother of God. He built a very great Church in her honour, and made her Patroness of Hungary. In return, the same Virgin received him into heaven, in the year 1038, upon the day of her own Assumption, which the Hungarians, by the example of the holy King, call “the Great Lady's Day.” His hallowed body yielded the sweetest savour, and reeked with an heavenly liquid, and amid many and diverse wonders it was removed by command of the Bishop of Rome into a more noble place, and more honourably buried. Pope Innocent XI. ordered his Feast to be held upon the 2nd day of September, on account of the famous victory over the Turks which was gained upon this day, in the year 1686, when the army of Leopold I., Emperor (elect) of the Romans, and King of Hungary, wrested from them, by the help of God, the city of Buda.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow is commemorated at Rome the holy Virgin Serapia. Under the Emperor Hadrian she was given over to two young rakes, but they could not deflower her. Neither could she afterwards be burnt with torches, wherefore, by the command of the judge Berillus, she was cudgelled and then beheaded with the sword. She suffered upon the 29th day of July, and was buried by blessed Sabina in her own sepulchre hard by the threshing-floor of Vindician. But the memory of her martyrdom is kept the most chiefly upon the 3rd day of September, when the stone coffin of Sabina and of herself was there set in order and adorned, and the place of prayer was meetly dedicated.
September 3rd 2026, the 21st day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Corinth, holy Phoebe, of whom the blessed Apostle Paul doth make mention in writing unto the Romans.
