Lettura 4
Papa Pio X, il cui nome prima era Giuseppe Sarto, nacque in un villaggio del Veneto, che chiamano Riese, anche se da genitori umili, ma distinto per probità e pietà. Iscritto tra gli alunni del Seminario di Padova, tanto avanzò per pietà e dottrina, da essere d'esempio ai compagni, e di ammirazione ai moderatori. Iniziato al sacerdozio, lavorò per molti anni prima nella cittadina di Tombolo, come cappellano, quindi a Salzano come parroco; ottemperando a tali incarichi, si distinse per tanta effusione di carità, tanto zelo sacerdotale e santità di vita, che il Vescovo di Treviso lo cooptò tra i canonici della chiesa cattedrale, e lo nominò cancelliere della Curia vescovile ed al contempo moderatore spirituale del Seminario diocesano. Avendo perseguiti questi uffici tanto egregiamente, fu nominato da Leone XIII, presso cui era in grandissima stima, Vescovo della chiesa di Mantova.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:

Lettura 5
Non trascurando alcuna parte del buon pastore, si impegnò specialmente, perché la gioventù chiamata ad essere eredità del Signore fosse educata propriamente alle cose sacre, le pie consociazioni aumentassero per nuovi incrementi, più decoro e pietà fosse dato ai riti del culto divino. Non smise di proclamare più forte i precetti si cui si basa la civiltà cristiana, ed egli, che conduceva una povera vita, non omise mai di dar aiuto ai poveri. Supportato da tanti meriti, fu iscritto tra i Cardinali e creato Patriarca di Venezia. Infine dopo la morte di Leone XIII, mentre i voti dei Padri Cardinali convergevano su di lui, ed avendo tentato inutilmente egli stesso con suppliche e lacrime di evitare tanto grande incarico, cedendo infine alle persuasioni disse: «accetto la croce», ed il vertice del Sommo Pontificato accetto con animo triste ma forte come una croce a lui offerta da Dio.

Lettura 6
Alzato alla cattedra di Pietro, non smise nulla dell'originale stile di vita.Si distinse specialmente per umiltà, semplicità e povertà, tanto che nel suo testamento avrebbe potuto scrivere: «Sono nato povero, ho vissuto da povero, voglio morire da povero». Infatti l'umiltà nutriva in lui la fortezza d'animo, quando si trattava della gloria di Dio, della libertà della Chiesa, e della salute delle anime. Un uomo di ingegno acutissimo e tenace di volontà, resse fermamente la Chiesa tra le tempeste dell'inizio del XX secolo, e l'ornò di istituzioni assai ammirabili. Richiamò la musica sacra all'originale splendore e dignità; costituì a Roma la sede principale per gli studi della sacra Bibbia; riformò con sapienza la Curia Romana; restaurò le leggi per l'istruzione dei fedeli attraverso il catechismo; favorì una più frequente uso fino anche al quotidiano della mensa eucaristica, ed aprì il suo accesso ai bambini anche dal primo uso della ragione; promuovette con solerzia la crescita dell'Azione Cattolica; provvide alla solida formazione del clero, avendo aggiunto anche seminari disposti per regioni; esortò tutti i sacerdoti a coltivare la vita interiore; collezionò le leggi della Chiesa in un corpo unico; condannò ed estirpò errori assai nocivi, compresi con l'appellazione di modernismo; rigettò il così detto divieto civile nell'elezione del Pontefice Massimo. Infine esausto dalle fatiche pieno di angoscia a causa della guerra Europea allora scoppiata, volò al premio celeste il giorno 20 agosto 1914. Papa XII lo iscrisse, con l'applauso di tutta la terra, nel numero dei Santi, risplendente ovunque nel mondo per fama di santità e famoso per i miracoli.

Trattato 123 su Giovanni, n° 5
Al suo triplice rinnegamento, Pietro oppose una triplice, confessione, affinché la sua lingua non obbedisca meno all'amore che al timore, e la morte intravista da lontano non sembri avergli dato più voce che la presenza della Vita. Rinnegare il Pastore fu effetto del timore: ufficio dell'amore sia pascere il gregge del Signore. Quelli che pascono le pecore di Cristo con l'animo che siano loro e non di Cristo, sono convinti di amare se stessi e non Cristo, avidi come sono di onori, di dominio, di ricchezze, invece della carità che fa obbedire, sollevare, piacere a Dio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Contro costoro, ai quali l'Apostolo rimprovera, gemendo, di cercare i propri interessi e non quelli di Gesù Cristo cf. Fil 2, 21, si leva forte e insistente la voce di Cristo. Che altro è dire: Mi ami tu? Pasci le mie pecore, se non dire: Se mi ami, non pensare a pascere te stesso, ma pasci le mie pecore, come mie, non come tue; cerca in esse la mia gloria, non la tua; il mio dominio, non il tuo; il mio guadagno e non il tuo; se non vuoi essere del numero di coloro che appartengono ai tempi difficili, i quali sono amanti di se stessi, con tutto quel che deriva da questa sorgente d'ogni male. L'Apostolo infatti, dopo aver detto: Vi saranno uomini amanti di se stessi, così prosegue: saranno amanti del denaro, vanagloriosi, arroganti, bestemmiatori, disobbedienti ai genitori, ingrati, scellerati, empi, senz'amore, calunniatori, incontinenti, spietati, non amanti del bene, traditori, protervi, accecati dai fumi dell'orgoglio, amanti del piacere più che di Dio; gente che ha l'apparenza di pietà, ma che ne ha rinnegato la forza 2 Tim 3, 1-5. Tutti questi mali derivano, come da loro fonte, da quello che per primo l'Apostolo ha citato: saranno amanti di se stessi.

Dove anche si dimostra che amare [diligere] è lo stesso che voler bene [amare]; l'ultima volta, infatti, il Signore non dice: Mi ami?, ma: Mi vuoi bene? Pope Pius X, whose name previously was Joseph Sarto, was born in the village of Riese in the Venetian province, to humble parents remarkable for their godliness and piety. He enrolled among the students in the seminary of Padua, where he exhibited such piety and learning that he was both an example to his fellow students and the admiration of his teachers. Upon his ordination to the priesthood, he labored for several years first as curate in the town of Tombolo, then as pastor at Salzano. He applied himself to his duties with such a constant flow of charity and such priestly zeal, and was so distinguished by the holiness of his life, that the Bishop of Treviso appointed him as a canon of the cathedral church and made him the chancellor of the bishop's curia, as well as spiritual director of the diocesan seminary. His performance in these duties was so outstanding and so highly impressed Leo XIII, that he made him bishop of the Church of Mantua.

Lacking in nothing that makes a good pastor, he labored particularly to teach young men called to the priesthood, as well as fostering the growth of devout associations and the beauty and dignity of divine worship. He would ever affirm and promote the laws upon which Christian civilization depend, and while leading himself a life of poverty, never missed the opportunity to alleviate the burden of poverty in others. Because of his great merits, he was made a cardinal and created Patriarch of Venice. After the death of Pope Leo XIII, when the votes of the College of Cardinals began to increase in his favor, he tried in vain with supplications and tears to be relieved of so heavy a burden. Finally he ceded to their persuasions, saying I accept the cross. Thus he accepted the crown of the supreme pontificate as a cross, offering himself to God, with a resigned but stedfast spirit.

Placed upon the chair of Peter, he gave up nothing of his former way of life. He shone especially in humility, simplicity and poverty, so that he was able to write in his last testament: I was born in poverty, I lived in poverty, and I wish to die in poverty. His humility, however, nourished his soul with strength, when it concerned the glory of God, the liberty of Holy Church, and the salvation of souls. A man of passionate temperament and of firm purpose, he ruled the Church firmly as it entered into the twentieth century, and adorned it with brilliant teachings. Finally worn out with his labors and overcome with grief at the European war which had just begun, he went to his heavenly reward on the twentieth day of August in the year 1914. To the threefold denial there is now appended a threefold confession, that his tongue may not yield a feebler service to love than to fear, and imminent death may not appear to have elicited more from his lips than present life. Let it be the office of love to feed the Lord's flock, if it was the signal of fear to deny the Shepherd. Those who have this purpose in feeding the flock of Christ, that they may have them as their own, and not as Christ's, are convicted of loving themselves, and not Christ, from the desire either of boasting, or wielding power, or acquiring gain, and not from the love of obeying, serving and pleasing God.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 4th 2026, the 22nd day of the Moon, is commemorated

The death of the holy Law-giver and Prophet Moses, upon Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab.
Upon the same 4th day of September, were born into the better life:
At Ancyra, in Galatia, the three holy children Rufinus, Silvanus, and Vitalicus, all martyrs.
At Chalons, in Gaul, under the Emperor Antonine, the holy martyr Marcellus he was bidden by Priscus the President to a sinful banquet, and, in his horror at such a feast, he boldly rebuked all them that were there for their serving of idols wherefore the same President, with strange cruelty, caused him to be buried in the earth up to the girdle, where he remained for three days still giving praise to God, and then yielded up to Him his spirit without stain.
On the same day, the holy martyrs Magnus, Castus, and Maximus.
At Trier, (in the third century,) the holy martyr Marcellus, Bishop (of that see.) On the same day holy Thamel, who had once been a priest of idols, and his Companions, all martyrs under the Emperor Hadrian.
Likewise the holy martyrs Theodore, Oceanus, Ammian, and Julian, who, under the Emperor Maximian, suffered martyrdom by having their feet cut off, and being then cast into a fire.
At Rimini, (in the fourth century,) the holy Deacon Marinus.
At Palermo, (in the year 1160,) the holy Rosalie, a Virgin of that city, sprung of the Imperial blood of Karl the Great, who for the love of Christ forsook her hereditary principality and her palace, and led an heavenly life alone upon the mountains and in caves of the earth.
At Naples, in Campania, holy Candida, who was the first to meet the holy Apostle Peter when he came to that city. She was baptized by him, and in the end she fell asleep in an holy death. There also, (in the sixth century,) holy Candida, called the Younger, famous for miracles.
At Viterbo, (in the year 1252,) the blessed Virgin Rose, (of the Third Order of Friars Minor.)

℣. O Signore, esaudisci la mia preghiera.
℟. E il mio grido giunga fino a Te.
Preghiamo.
O Dio, che per la difesa della fede cattolica e per la sua universale restaurazione in Cristo, hai riempito il Santo Papa Pio X di celeste sapienza e di apostolica fortezza, concedici propizio che, dopo aver seguito le sue istruzioni ed i suoi esempi, possiamo ottenere il premio eterno.
Per il medesimo nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, tuo Figlio, che è Dio, e vive e regna con te, in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.
