Antifona mariana dell'Avvento e del Tempo di Natale, attribuita ad Ermanno il Contratto (sec. XI).
Alma Redemptóris Mater,
quæ pérvia cæli porta manes,
et stella maris,
succúrre cadénti, súrgere qui curat, pópulo:
tu quæ genuísti, natúra miránte,
tuum sanctum Genitórem,
Virgo prius ac postérius,
Gabriélis ab ore sumens illud Ave,
peccatórum miserére.
O eccelsa Madre del Redentore,
porta dei cieli sempre aperta,
stella del mare,
soccorri il popolo che cade e che cerca di risorgere:
tu che generasti, fra lo stupore della natura,
il tuo santo Creatore;
Vergine prima e dopo,
che dalla bocca di Gabriele accogliesti il saluto;
abbi pietà dei peccatori.
O loving Mother of the Redeemer,
who remainest the accessible gate of heaven,
and star of the sea,
give aid to a falling people that strives to rise:
thou who, while nature marveled,
didst beget thy holy Creator;
Virgin before and after,
receiving that “Ave” from the mouth of Gabriel,
have mercy on sinners.
